How We Use the Tuttle Twins Books in Our Homeschool

I first came across The Tuttle Twins series just before the world went into pandemic chaos. Originally, I was a bit taken aback by some of the Libertarian values the books display. But the core economic principles of the Tuttle Twins books were ones I wanted my children to know and understand.

Using The Tuttle Twins in Our Homeschool

I did not want to simply hand these books over to my children to read on their own and call it good. You can, of course. And if your political values align, may have no hesitation in doing so.

For our family, I knew the best value from The Tuttle Twins books would come in further discussion on the economic principles taught. I created a schedule to work through the books within a semester. Since there is approximately the same number of books as weeks in a semester, we roughly averaged one book a week.

The Tuttle Twins Homeschool Book Club

The Tuttle Twins series is written for elementary-aged children. All my school-aged children read the books. My second grader was able to read through the books on her own. If you have a struggling or emerging reader, the books are available as audio books.

Each week we would read through the assigned Tuttle Twins book and then gather together at the end of the week to discuss it. At the back of the books there are a few discussion questions to get you started. The activity packs contain more discussion questions.

Since my background is in economics, I felt comfortable using these as a starting point and then explaining the economic principle in greater detail myself. Inspire Intelligent Converations with The Tuttle Twins in Your Homeschool

The intellectual conversations The Tuttle Twins books inspire are the real reason to get them. As we gathered together we would discuss first the story in the book before moving on to the economic principles taught. Even my second grader was able to grasp the economic principles mention in The Tuttle Twins stories. The stories helped her to understand economic principles some adults struggle with. Or haven’t even heard of!

For my older kids, I would have them look for examples of the economic principles in real-life. Either where they were being used correctly or incorrecly. I then had them explain how knowledge or lack of knowledge of the economic principle being taught influenced the behavior of individuals and governments.

This allowed them to apply what knowledge they were learning. It also helped them to think critically about topics they would see in the news or about information from conversations with family and friends.

Easily Incorporate The Tuttle Twins in Your Homeschool

Adding The Tuttle Twins to our homeschool studies was a simple matter. It didn’t take up much time and it provided my children with valuable information.
