An Exciting Look at Our Spectacular Homeschool Curriculum Choices

Inside: Take a look at our homeschool curriculum choices for 10th, 7th, 5th, 2nd, and Pre-K.

The ongoing arrival of curriculum makes it feel like Christmas here, despite the warmer weather. My toddler has made friends with the Fed Ex and Amazon vans and rushes to wave as they drive away.

After careful research and planning, it all starts to come together. Our new school year is starting to take shape.

Now that all our curriculum has arrived, I’ll spend time planning out our year. Well, I actually only plan a quarter at a time. For one, planning a whole year at once seems daunting. And two, I have a lot of kids. I can guarantee something will happen to necessitate a change in whatever plans I made. In which case, I like the amount of work going down the drain to be minimal. Flexible is the name of the game.

But, there is no need for me to finish my planning before announcing what curriculum we are using for the upcoming year! We have some new additions to our homeschool curriculum this year I am excited about.

Our 7th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices

7th grade homeschool curriculum choices for the gifted child

Ellawyn is entering Junior High this year. Junior High is such a big transition time. It’s when course load starts to become heavier to prepare for high school and kids enter full-on tween mode.

(Here is a great book on parenting tweens.)

This is also the time when some kids will get a jump start on their high school classes. Eighth grade is typically the intro year to high school classes, although, if you have a child highly gifted in math, they may already be doing high school Algebra in 7th grade.

Ellawyn is doubling up in science this year because it’s her jam. And because we want to start high school science next year.

Here are our 7th grade homeschool curriculum choices:

Lightning Literature 7th grade

Easy Grammar Plus

Vocabulary from Classical Roots A

Rod & Staff Spelling 8

Teaching Textbooks Pre-Algebra

Olivia is entering 2nd grade this year. We’re still mostly focusing on the basics of reading, writing and math. A lot of her learning will not come through a structured curriculum, but through delight-directed learning.

I have some subscriptions to online learning sites that I will also be using. Olivia loves playing online, so I use them as an incentive for her to finish her regular coursework.

The Online Educational Sites I will be using as supplemental practice are:

Reading Eggs/Mathseeds

learn to read online

ABCMouse

Homer

Our Pre-School Homeschool Curriculum Choices

Lenora will be doing Pre-School this year. Mostly because she wants to be included and she is excited to do “schoolwork.” I have put Raena in charge of teaching Lenora since she will be doing online classes for college from home this coming semester and she enjoys creating lesson plans.

Lenora really only has two subjects because I want most of her learning to come through play. And, if she doesn’t want to do school, then we don’t.

Our Pre-School Homeschool Curriculum Choices:

Learning Dynamics: Learn to Read in 4 Weeks

Singapore Math Dimensions PK

The Good & the Beautiful Doodles & Pre-Writing for Littles

Lots of read-alouds and delight-directed learning. Lenora will also have some limited time on Homer and ABCMouse.

Where I Buy My Homeschool Curriculum

Normally, I would wait to purchase curriculum until I had the opportunity to attend a homeschool convention. Even though many vendors have quit bringing their products to the fair, many will supply a discount code or offer free shipping. When attending a convention is not an option, or if I’m still undecided, then there are a few sites I rely on to get me the best prices.

Rainbow Resources has a wide variety of curriculum at great prices.

Christianbook is another. Their prices are similar to Rainbow Resources and I usually price check between the two.

Amazon and Ebay are also options, especially if I’m looking to buy used or for an older edition.

When I’m purchasing literature to add to our studies, I tend to buy used. I have the best luck on Abe Books and Amazon.

AbeBooks. Thousands of booksellers - millions of books. books

If you prefer audio books, or like to have a selection of both, try Audible and get two free audiobooks.

Now, I have to get back to planning the first part of our year before my children sneak off with (more of) their new curriculum. Olivia has already absconded with the box full of math manipulatives and games from The Good & the Beautiful and the rest keep trying to sneak off with the books for our literature curriculum.

I’m glad they’re as excited as I am for new curriculum. They’re not quite Christmas excited, but there is a special anticipation that comes with the first day of a new school year.

What curriculum/subject are you most excited about this year?
