Review of WriteShop I Homeschool Writing Curriculum for Middle School

This post is sponsored by WriteShop. I received compensation for my time in exchange for an honest review of the new WriteShop I 5th edition writing curriculum and video course.

There’s no getting around teaching writing in your homeschool. Let’s face it, in this age of emojis and text talk, it’s even more important our teens learn to string together a cohesive sentence. But that doesn’t mean writing has to be painful or time-intensive–for you or your teen.

WriteShop recently updated their curriculum and we have been trying out WriteShop I 5th edition with their Video Course.

Easy to Follow Homeschool Writing Lessons for Middle School

WriteShop I & II is a faith-neutral, incremental writing program geared toward middle school and high school students. Each lesson builds on skills from previous lessons without overwhelming the student with too many new ideas at once.

The daily lessons are relatively quick. Lessons span one to two weeks. Time spent to get through the lessons can be easily adapted to the needs of your teen.

In addition to being easy to follow, the lessons use examples teens can relate to, such as observing a mock car accident to learn point-of-view. My daughter appreciated this ability to create a visual of what the lesson was asking for. It gave her a better idea of what she was aiming for in her writing.

WriteShop’s Video Writing Course

One of my biggest goals in homeschooling is teaching my children to be independent learners by the time they reach middle school. I want them to be able to take control of their learning. This is possible with WriteShop’s Video Course.

The video course teaches the writing lessons for you. No more waiting on mom to teach the lesson. And the videos bring to life some of the visual examples given. If you have a visual or auditory learner, these videos will be very valuable.

Students can repeat or pause the video, to allow learning to happen at their pace. The videos also never expire, so if your tween or teen ever needs a refresher, they can go back and rewatch the videos.

WriteShop’s Video Course corresponds seamlessly with their new 5th edition book (it does still work with earlier versions). You do have the option to purchase the videos with or without the books.

Save Time by Teaching Your Teen to Self-Edit

One of the biggest benefits of the WriteShop writing curriculum I feel is the lessons teaching teens to self-edit. This is a valuable skill that is absolutely necessary, especially if you have a teen who is college-bound. I find as they get better at self-editing, their writing, in general, improves as well. This is because they are being put in a position to look for and notice the mistakes they make when writing. And realizing what mistakes they commonly make, allows them to work toward eliminating them.
