Free Summer Homeschool Curriculum to Stay Engaged

When I was younger, summer school was something to be dreaded. Who wanted to do school in the summer, after all? But, being a child who loved learning, it didn’t take long before I missed it.

Now that I homeschool, I choose to extend our learning into the summer. Granted, our summer homeschool schedule is much more relaxed. I want plenty of time for outings and friends.

But there are several reasons why we choose to homeschool through the summer months.

No Idle Hands

I firmly believe children should have an opportunity to be bored. It gives them a chance to solve their own problem (boredom) and to think creatively. But I also want my children to be engaged in worthwhile efforts. Summer homeschool work gives them something to do each day.

Homeschooling through Summer Maintains Routines

I like our routines. It’s a struggle whenever we get off them to get everybody back on board. Not to mention, my kids do better when we stick to a routine, no matter how loosely structured.

Continuing our homeschool schedule through the summer keeps everybody happy.

We Get to Focus More on Homeschool Electives & Delight-Directed Learning

Doing the school year, reading, writing, and arithmetic, take center stage. We do our best to fit in everything else, but if we are stretched, they get shelved.

During the summer, those homeschool electives get moved to the forefront and get our attention. My kids like this because it’s mostly fun things, so they don’t feel like they’re doing school even though they are.

Summer homeschool becomes art and science projects every day, with a sprinkling of history and some math games on the side.

This is also when I give my kids free reign to dig deep into their interests. During the school year, they still have to get their regular school work done, even if it’s not their favorite. But during the summer, they can choose to only do that one subject that they love.

Summer Homeschooling Prevents Summer Slide

Homeschooling through the summer helps prevent summer slide. My kids all love reading and choose to do it on their own all the time, so I don’t worry about reading levels through the summer.

But I like for math to make a weekly, if not daily, appearance during the summer. When my kids are still regularly doing math through the summer, we have no need to do any of the review lessons at the beginning of the curriculum. There’s really no need to review at all. We just jump right in with the next year.

Also, summer math can be fun math. Online math game sites are a favorite during the summer.
