Celebrating National Poetry Day with Service

Wednesday was National Poetry Day, so our homeschool group celebrated by taking the kids and our preschool co-op to read poetry to residents at an assisted living home.

Haydn read Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore by William Brighty Rands.

Ellawyn chose to read The Walrus and the Carpenter by Lewis Carroll.

Olivia and her preschool friends recited Ooey Gooey, a poem about a worm.  I was helping, so I didn’t get a picture of them.

At the end, the kids sang Popcorn Popping and I am a Child of God.  Each of the kids got to go around and shake the resident’s hands and introduce themselves.  Some were a little shy, but they all did it.

We enjoyed being able to practice our public speaking skills and perform a service for the elderly in our community.  I feel it is important for our children to have these opportunities to serve and we look forward to returning another time.
