We received both the Teacher Guide and the Student Study Guide for all four sets in the fourth-grade level. If you purchase the LiteratureSets, they come with a copy of the novel. However, you can purchase each individually without the corresponding book.

What’s in the Fourth Grade Literature Set Teacher’s Guide?

The Memoria Press Teacher’s Guide for Fourth Grade Literature contains:

  • Answers to the Student Study Guide
  • Discussion Questions Key
  • Blank Tests and Quizzes with Answer Key
  • A few contain maps or other info related to the novel in the Appendix

The Classical Literature Set Teacher’s Guide was beneficial to me because with seven children I do not always have the time to pre-read or even read along with all the books my children are reading. The Teacher’s Guide allowed me to still ask discussion questions and participate in talking about the story with my son.

I was also able to grade his answers without having to read the book first myself.

Having the Teacher’s Guide for the Fourth Grade Literature Set was a big time saver for me.

Fourth Grade Literature Set Student Study Guide from Memoria Press

The Fourth Grade Student Study Guide is broken into six sections to help your child delve deeper and better understand the story they are reading.

The six sections are:

  • Reading Notes–This section explains things found in the reading the student may be unfamiliar with, whether it be locations or uncommon idioms.
  • Vocabulary–A small selection of vocabulary words are chosen from the reading and presented with the phrase from the book they are found in.
  • Comprehension Questions–There are typically four or so questions directly related to the current chapter being read.
  • Quotations–There is one quotation from every chapter. You can use quotations to talk about the story.
  • Discussion Questions–The discussion questions guide you as you discuss the reading.
  • Enrichment–The activities in the enrichment section vary from composition, copywork, sequencing, research, mapping, drawing, literary terms, and more.

How We Use the Memoria Press Fourth Grade Literature Guide Sets

The books in the Memoria Press Fourth Grade Literature Guide Set can be done in any order.

We chose to begin with The Cricket in Times Square.

I had my son read the Reading Notes and do the Vocabulary before doing the assigned reading. After we would do the Comprehension and Discussion Questions together and then he would do the Enrichment on his own.

Originally, I had him write the comprehension answers in the book, but he really dislikes writing. Therefore, I only had him do the vocabulary and enrichment in the book and we did the other two orally. This worked well for us.

We came across at least one discussion question that asks them to use their knowledge of Latin. If you do not include Latin, skipping this will make no difference. If you do, this was a good place to incorporate that knowledge.

Homeschool Literature Curriculum You Can Trust

One of the things I like about Memoria Press is that I can trust its literature selections. Classical education is about exposing your children to well-written and morally strong books. Books at each level should not only be preparing them to eventually read and understand the Classics when they are older, but also to learn to love good books. Books where there is an easy distinction between right and wrong, where the good guys win, and there is a moral lesson to learn.

With limited time, it is important that I can trust the books my children are reading are not just well written, but aligned with our morals and age-appropriate.

With Memoria Press, I am able to do just that.

I was pleased with the book selection for the fourth-grade literature set. Especially the inclusion of Dangerous Journey. This book should be on everyone’s reading list. This was one my son and I decided to read-aloud together. I am so glad Memoria Press has a study guide for Dangerous Journey and that it’s part of the fourth-grade literature curriculum.

Memoria Press is Adaptable with other Teaching Methods

While Memoria Press caters to a Classical education crowd, the materials for their Literature Guide Set would fit comfortably with other teaching methods. We prefer a Charlotte Mason method, but enjoy some aspects, such as this one from a Classical approach.

If you are simply looking for a fourth-grade literature study for your child, these would also be a good fit.
