Magic Stix Washable Markers {Review}
(This post contains affiliate links.)
Having a house full of marker abuse specialists who are notorious for leaving the cap off markers, I had nearly given up having markers in our home. Imagine my surprise when I learned that The Pencil Grip, Inc. had a set of markers that they guaranteed wouldn’t dry out for SEVEN days with the cap off! I just had to know for myself if their claim was true.
The Magic Stix Washable Markers arrived in a nifty plastic carrying case with clasps at the top to keep it closed. Surprisingly, my children have kept the markers in the case. When they are done they place them back in their slots, close it up and put it away.
Magic Stix Cap Test
One of the first things we did was pick a marker to test. I mean, if a company is going to claim its markers will last for seven days with the cap off and you’re homeschoolers, that’s a science project begging to happen.
My children insisted I refrain from picking any of their favorite colors, in case the claim proved untrue. They had a hard time settling on one to potentially sacrifice. Eventually we picked an olive color.
For our hypothesis we decided that the marker probably wouldn’t dry out, but the color would be affected, most likely fading as the days went by.
We set the marker on the sheet we were testing it on in another room so nobody would accidentally cap it. Each day I went and used the marker.
Results
We found that the color was affected, sort of, but not in the way we expected. Each day when I went to use the marker, it was a deeper color from day one; however, as the ink dried it would lighten to closer to the original color. On day seven, it was still going strong. I know many on the Crew left their markers uncapped for way longer than the seven days the company guaranteed and they were still going strong.
We also had a few unexpected marker cap tests. More than once I went to help clean up or got the markers out to find the cap had not been securely clicked down. And more than once I found this scene:
Markers left completely uncapped for who knows how long. In the past, these would have gone straight into the trash. The markers would have been dried out enough that they weren’t worth saving. Now, I just replace the cap and put them away.
Wash-ability
We were also given the opportunity to test the wash-ability factor of the markers when my one year old colored all over herself and her clothing. I am pleased to say it washed right out of her clothes. It did take a good scrubbing to get it off of skin, but it did come off.
Color Boldness and Usage
My kids have loved having markers in the house again. The colors are bright and bold and come in different shades of the same color, which they really enjoyed for shading. I loved the brightness of these markers!
My daughter, Ellawyn, liked using them for her science to draw birds from her field guide.
We also got them out when we had co-op friends over to decorate Valentines.
Even with a table of 4 and 5 year old’s using markers, I didn’t feel the need to helicopter to make sure the lids were promptly replaced. Because the markers are a medium point, I didn’t need to worry about them applying too much pressure and ruining them.
Another random thing I liked was that the lids were all the same color. It was nice to just be able to grab a marker and a lid and put them together. No searching or taking more time finding the color that matched the marker. A rather insignificant thing, I know, but it was something I noticed and appreciated.
I would consider Magic Stix Washable Markers a must have for your art supply. My family has really enjoyed them. I have enjoyed the freedom that comes from not feeling as though money is being wasted every time I found an uncapped marker. Honestly, you need these.
Update: Over a year later and we still have these markers. After multiple times being left uncapped, including one that got lost behind the couch capless for nearly a month, they are finally starting to lose their boldness. My kids are all asking me when we can replace them because they enjoyed them so much.
We live in a world run by code. Our kids nowadays are surrounded by technology from the moment they’re born. Living in one of the tech capitals, the pressure for kids to begin coding before they can talk is real. Impractical, certainly, but there nonetheless. The thing is, not all coding programs or courses are…
While the best way to teach scripture stories is straight from the source, sometimes it can be helpful to have those stories laid out in a narrative, especially for young children. We recently reviewed two books from Barbour Publishing’s series, Kingdom Files. These books are biographies of individuals from the Bible written in the format of…
Nothing by Natalee Creech is the latest children’s book from WorthyKids, an imprint of Hachette Book Group. What is Nothing About? Nothing is based on the promise in Romans 8:38-39 that nothing can separate us from God’s love. The book begins with the question, “Can anything separate me from God’s love?” The author then explores…

We recently had some interesting books pique our interest. Media enhanced children’s books by Weigl Publishers adds an element of fun to learning. We were provided with three different books: Glaciers, from the series “Earth’s Water;” A Lion’s World from the “EyeDiscover” series; and There Once Was A Cowpoke Who Swallowed An Ant. Each book…
I don’t plan on a formal test. My kids will have it everywhere without lids without my promoting. I am pretty excited to try it out though!
Oh yes, my marker monsters will test these out all day long but the experiment will be uncontrolled, without a doubt!
We will test the washability I'm sure! As well as the caps, both by accident I'm sure!
We would definitely test, but it would likely be accidental before it was intentional! Haha! My little kids lose caps pretty quickly.
We definitely would test. Lol, my kids are still very literal and want everything to be exactly as is advertised
