A+ Interactive Math {Review of Online Family Math Package}

Math.  It’s one of those dreaded homeschool subjects.  And yet, it’s one of the most vital.  We recently reviewed the Family Math Package offered by A+ Interactive Math (by A+ TutorSoft Inc.)
A+ TutorSoft
A+ Interactive Math is an online math curriculum that teaches K1-Algebra.  You can choose the level to place your child in and are free to change it at any time if it is too easy, too hard, or if you just need to go back and review a concept taught in a previous grade.  The Family Package we reviewed gives the option of having up to ten students, which is great for large families such as ours.  Each lesson has a text, video and audio component to appeal to different learning styles.
When you set up your account, you also set up an account with a separate username and login for each student.  As the parent, you have access to all of the accounts.  After you login, whether for the parent or student, you then click the “launch” button which launches the program in a different browser.

Here are some of the pros and cons I found with the program:
PROS
  • The program gives you access to the curriculum book online, so if I needed to help my daughter I could go look for that lesson in the book.  It also allows you the option to teach the lessons yourself.

  • It gives a suggested lesson plan for each grade.

  • It allows me to access reports to check on progress.  I could even view her exams to see which problem(s) she got wrong to know what to help her on.

  • It includes the worksheet solution guide, so you can see the steps needed to solve the problem.

  • It includes the option of printing off worksheets and exams and entering the grades yourself.
  • Your student has the option of turning off the video and just reading the text.  My daughter got frustrated with how long the videos took and since she could read the lesson quicker, chose that route.
  • It’s self grading.  I feel with math, it is especially important that kids know as soon as they are doing something incorrect so they can correct it right away.
CONS
  • The site comes with a learning curve to learn how to navigate.
  • My daughter had to manually select that her lessons were completed, even though she was completing them online through the site.  I felt as though they should have been marked automatically.
I had my 7th grade daughter, Allie, try their pre-algebra course.  We have been working on pre-algebra this year and there were some areas she was struggling with.  We skipped the lessons we knew she was comfortable in and started in one where she wasn’t.

Since she was the one working more closely with the program, I asked her to give me a list of her pros and cons for working with the program.
PROS
  • I like how the lessons are not too long
  • I like being able to just read the lesson
  • I like the online worksheets
  • I like the timed exams
  • I like that I can generate new exams with new problems, instead of having to do the same problems
  • I like that they have a Certificate of Accomplishment because it lets you know what you did.

CONS

  • I don’t like how long it takes to watch the video’s
  • I thought the site was very confusing to navigate
A+ Interactive Math (by A+ TutorSoft Inc.) also has an Adaptive Math Curriculum that works based off of placement exams and a target grade level to discover gaps.  Other members of the Crew reviewed this program, so click on over to see which program would be best for your family.
