Easy Grammar for High School {Review}

When it comes to grammar I like to keep it simple. That is why Easy Grammar Ultimate Series: Grade 9 from Easy Grammar Systems was the perfect addition to our ninth grade English.

We received both the Teacher Edition of Easy Grammar Ultimate Series: Grade 9 and the Test Booklet for review.

The Easy Grammar Approach

There are a 180 daily grammar lessons in the Teacher’s Edition. The pages are reproducible for student use. I just had my daughter write her answers in a notebook because I knew I would fall behind if I had to remember to copy them. For this purpose, the downloadable version would have been better. However, there is a student book that can be purchased. If you are only teaching one child, they could just write in the Teacher’s book.

The lessons are designed to be taught and completed in ten minutes each day. And that really is an adequate assessment of how long it takes. I had my daughter, Allie, read the lesson herself and then complete the page. Some days it didn’t even take her the full ten minutes.

The Lesson Layout

The teaching portion of each lesson is found in bold. Each lesson is divided into five sections.

The first part is always centered around capitalization. These sentences often contained interesting information about places or people. These factual tidbits were fun to read.

The second part has students insert the proper punctuation into sentences. I liked that this included the use of hyphens, letter greetings, and outlines, to name a few.

Parts three and four include the teaching of other grammar applications and concepts. This is where you will find teaching on parts of speech, spelling, analogies, phrases and clauses, etc.

Part five is sentence combining where students take the information presented and combine it into one better sentence. These sentences also contained fun bits of trivia.

As the lessons progress throughout the text, the concepts are reviewed and expanded upon. This format follows a mastery approach.

Why We Loved Easy Grammar

I really liked that the layout of the lessons was consistent. This was a favorite of Allie’s as well. She found it helpful to have them divided into sections. For example, when working on part one she knew she only had to focus on capitalization. This allowed her to give all her attention to learning the rules regarding capitalization. This compartmentalizing really fit with her personality.

Having daily lessons that were short and to the point helped to stay consistent and to learn the material. Allie loved that the lessons could be done in as little as ten minutes. Grammar went from being a chore she tried to avoid to a subject she enjoyed doing.

The mastery approach of Easy Grammar Systems worked for us. For years Allie has struggled to learn the difference between a phrase and a clause. With Easy Grammar she finally got it!

Grammar doesn’t need to be painful or boring and dull. Nor does it need to take a long time. With Easy Grammar’s 10 minute lessons, your child can achieve mastery over basic grammar concepts.
