Beautiful Feet Geography through Literature Lesson Manual

First, let’s take a moment to mention just how beautiful the lesson manual itself is. Done in full color, there are gorgeous pictures of landscapes and nature displayed, coupled with state birds and plants throughout. Kids will enjoy simply flipping through it to look at the pictures. Parents will also enjoy the beauty it possesses.

The lesson manual is divided into five sections. The first section covers foundational geography knowledge, such as learning about cardinal directions and maps. The remaining four sections divide up the Unites States into sections to study.

One of the things I first noticed about this homeschool geography curriculum was the simplicity of the lessons. They take a minute or two to read through and 10-15 minutes to execute. The lessons are discussion/narration based with some hands-on activities.

There are three types of optional learning experiences to complement the lessons: Dig Deeper, Explore Your World, and Culinary Connection.

Dig Deeper

Dig Deeper provides resources such as websites, videos, or hands-on activities to allow students to “chase a topic down a rabbit trail.” This is the section where you find material to expand your study.

Explore Your World

Explore Your World offers suggestions for exploring the area being studied. It includes suggestions for field trips and outings. These can be a fun tool to have students plan a pretend trip to the area.

Culinary Connection

Culinary Connection provides links to recipes to explore geography through food. The recipes are related to either the crops in the area or the cultural history.

With a grade range of K-3rd, this is perfect for homeschooling multiple children or meeting children whose skill level may not reflect their grade/age.

Exploring US Geography through Literature

I love incorporating good books into our learning wherever I can. My children respond to stories. In the absence of physical travel, books are the next best thing to give kids the experiences of other places. So a homeschool geography curriculum that incorporates good books just seems natural.

There are eleven required books for the curriculum. These books provide the spine for what children will be learning and are used throughout the year.

In addition, at the beginning of each section are Rabbit Trails. Rabbit Trails provides a list of books related to the geographical region being studied. You can pick and choose which ones if any you add to your studies.

Maps, Maps, Maps: What’s a Homeschool Geography Curriculum Without Them?

One of the things I like best about this curriculum is the familiarity with the United States map children will have by the end. The US geography curriculum begins by teaching about cardinal directions and familiarizing kids with what maps are and why we use them.

Learning the sun rises in the East and sets in the West

There is a large paper map of the United States that is part of the curriculum. Students will use it to locate states, but will also mark on the map as they go.

In addition, several of the books have pictures of the United States map in them. The students also spend time looking at these maps.

My daughter has been enjoying painting the large map as we go. By the end she will have a personalized US map.

I enjoy the relaxed approach and the flexibility to create lessons as in depth as I want. The rabbit trails and optional sections to enrich our lessons are great also. I love the map work. This is a perfect homeschool geography curriculum for teaching elementary students about the United States.
