Online Homeschool Chemistry Course with Fascinating Education: Review

About Fascinating Education Online Homeschool Science Curriculum

Fascinating Education science courses are all taught by Dr. Sheldon Margulies. Dr. Margulies is a retired neurologist who has taught over 2500 medical students and residents during his career. He is now turning his attention to younger students to help them really grasp scientific concepts, such as Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. And for those students who are interested in a career in medicine, there is even a Logic of Medicine course he offers.

Fascinating Education Online Chemistry Course for High School

Fascinating Chemistry lessons are comprised of pre-recorded videos with narrated images. Lessons contain a video, a script of the lesson, a video with review questions, the review script, and a test. There is also a PDF version of the test with an answer key.

There are nineteen lessons total. Dr. Margulies, aka The Fascinator, works to explains complex concepts in terms teens will easily understand. He doesn’t aim for memorization, but for getting students to truly understand the concepts so they can use the knowledge they’ve learned to understand and explain concepts they might not have thought about. Such as, why glass shatters when you hit it with a hammer, but a nail bends.

The lessons are designed so your teen will feel like they are always succeeding. Students who feel confident in science view the topic more positively and have an increased desire to learn the material as learning is no longer a burden.

Throughout each lesson, there is a “catch your breath” slide. These slides summarize what has been taught up to that point and provide a good point for a short break or a pause in the lesson if needed. Information is summarized again at the end of the lesson with “what did we learn” questions. The lessons take about an hour a day to work through.

Math in Fascinating Chemistry

Math is a part of high school chemistry and this course is no exception. Students should have an understanding of Algebra before attempting the course.

However, Dr. Margulies doesn’t want students getting tripped up in math concepts during the middle of the lesson. He wants them to be able to focus on the Chemistry concepts being learned. Therefore, the math the students will need to know comes at the end of each lesson. Right now, this has been done through lesson 9 and there are plans to rework the rest of the lessons in this manner also.

Fascinating Chemistry Labs

Labs are included in the Fascinating Chemistry curriculum. There are twelve labs total your teen will work through. The labs are presented through PDF instructions the student will follow to complete on their own.

Adult supervision is required for some labs as some use chemicals that are dangerous if handled improperly. It does tell you in the lab, whether or not this is one that can be done alone or if an adult needs to be present.

Is Fascinating Chemistry Right for Your Teen?

Teens who are audio visual learners are going to be the best fit for this course. If your teen balks at boring textbooks and likes lots of images to go along with the concept being taught, then this course will be a good fit.

My daughter is rare in that she prefers a textbook over a video course. For her, she preferred to read the script as opposed to watching the videos. Which was totally okay and workable. The lessons, tests, and labs are all able to be printed off for those students who would prefer to read the lessons on their own.

Fascinating Chemistry courses are well done and will give your teen a good understanding of Chemistry concepts for high school.
