Our family has loved using Reading Eggs in our homeschool. We were excited about the chance to review their workbook 200 Essential Math Skills for First Grade. The workbook can be used alone or in accompaniment with their online Mathseeds program.
We first fell in love with Reading Eggs last year when we had the opportunity to review their 240 Essential Reading Skills for Kindergarten workbook and online subscription. It quickly became Olivia’s favorite. She loved working through both the online program and the workbook.
One year later and she is still just as excited about it. Mathseeds is probably her favorite way to learn math skills. She was happy to have the workbook to go along with the online program.
Getting Started With Mathseeds
The website and the workbook are meant to work in tangent with one another, although both can be used independently. When used together, however, they increase effectiveness.
On the website, you begin by having your child take a placement test. This will assess their skill level and which Map they should begin on. First grade begins on Lesson 51 on Map 11 and continues through Lesson 100 on Map 20.
For homeschool families, there is also a program schedule that you can choose to use that breaks the curriculum into weeks for the year.
If you were interested in using Reading Eggs as a full curriculum, then this would be beneficial. It can also just give you an idea of how you might use the program.
I had Olivia do the lesson online first and then reinforced it with the workbook.
Mathseeds Online Lessons
Each lesson online begins with a short video of the new concept being taught. This is followed by practice activities, games, and songs to reinforce learning. My daughter loves the games!
Once you are in the Mathseeds program, your child is able to choose from the main menu what they would like to do.
Right away your child can see what lesson they are on. Clicking on the lesson icon takes you to the Map.
As they progress and their Avatar moves, the acorns on the map will turn into something related to that maps theme. For Map 15, the theme is Jurassic and the acorns turn into dinosaurs.
From there they will enter into the lesson.
After a short video explaining the concept, they will do the exercises. For this lesson, they are identifying the number of seeds and then placing half of the seeds in each planter.
In addition to the lesson, there are other ways online for them to practice their math skills.
In the Driving Tests, they can test their skills in six different areas.
- Number
- Operations
- Patterns & Fractions
- Measurement
- Geometry
- Data
In the Playroom, children can choose to play different games, listen to songs, or read books about numbers. Depending on what you click in the playroom determines the type of activity.
In the Arcade, students can choose to use acorns they have earned to play an arcade style math game.
Students can also have fun outfitting their avatar by purchasing items in the Shop for use in their Treehouse.
Lastly, there is a place where students can see the awards they have earned.
Mathseeds Workbook
In front of the workbook, a year planner is also listed. This planner is helpful because it essentially tells you when your child will be learning what principle. I would consider it more of a scope and sequence than a planner.
There are also ideas for learning activities listed at the very beginning of the workbook to help you show your child how the math skills they are learning apply to real life.
After doing the lesson online, then the workbook is used to reinforce the material. If you are not using the online program, then you will need to teach the concept first.
At the end of the lesson in the workbook, there is a yellow panel that helps to track progress between the online program and workbook. I rarely remembered to fill this in.
We love everything about the Mathseeds program through Reading Eggs.
Olivia truly enjoys using their program. She will ask when she gets to do Reading Eggs every day. Lately, her younger sister has been asking when she gets to do Reading Eggs because she sees how much fun Olivia is having. We will wait until she’s a smidgen older and then let her start as well.
