Get College-Ready Writing with BetterRhetor {Review}
Is my teen’s writing college ready? Have they learned the skills necessary to write a successful paper? If you are like most parents of a high school student, you might have found yourself asking these very questions. In fact, a big concern for parents of high school students is ensuring their child is prepared for college level writing. BetterRhetor aims to help students make the leap from high school to college level writing.
About the BetterRhetor Course
Through their College-Ready Writing Essentials™ course, Dr. William Bryant guides students through the complex step-by-step process of writing a college ready, research-based, persuasive essay. The course is taught in 25 modules that are meant to be completed in five weeks.
There are two different packages available. The first is the Full Package. The second is the Premium Package. The Premium package, which we reviewed, includes additional exercises and personal feedback from Dr. Bryant on your submitted essay.
I had my senior, Raena, work through the course. I asked her to share her thoughts on the program, since she spent the most time with it.
What My Daughter Thought
I thought this was a really good writing program. The instructor did a thorough job of explaining the steps we were taking toward writing a paper, even if they seemed kind of long and tedious. Although that may have only been because I had to type up the answers to every question.
The lectures were clear and relatively easy to understand. They provided many examples to help the student understand exactly what it is he wants you to do. The examples were well-thought out, and relatively easy to translate to whatever your topic was. I really appreciated the fact that the examples made it very clear on what they were exemplifying.
Improvements She Would Like
There are two things that I would change to make the course even better. I found that it was really, really tedious to log in. I was mostly just wandering around the website until I found the course, where I then had to find my lesson, and log in through the course. There was no type of sign in button anywhere on the site that was easily noticeable, if it was there at all.
Second, I would have really liked for there to have been a syllabus. I was never really sure how long to spend on a lesson, and each lesson varied pretty drastically in worksheet number and workload. Some lessons only had one worksheet with a couple questions, others had four different worksheets that were several pages each.
Raena’s Final Thoughts on BetterRhetor
All in all, BetterRhetor is a very good and well though out course. Upon completion, I fully expect my writing skills to have improved a lot. I am not sure if I will follow every step of the process again (at least not on paper), but I can definitely see how those steps are important to consider when writing a college level research paper.
My Overall Perception
College-Ready Writing Essentials™ is an in depth course that will definitely help to improve your teen’s writing skills. In addition, it will teach what is expected at a college level.
Writing is one of Raena’s strengths, even so, this course took up a lot of her time. It is possible that in can be finished in five weeks, if it is the only thing your child is working on. For us, we only made it about half way through the course during the six week review period. Raena spent 1-2 hours on it almost daily.
Thankfully, this is a self-paced course, so she was able to take what time she needed to truly absorb the material.
BetterRhetor Essay Evaluation
I am looking forward to having Raena complete the course and submit her essay for review as constructive criticism is a great way to improve writing skills. This personal touch will be valuable in showing her not only what will be expected, but where she can best improve.
