Did you know many historians consider the book, The Tale of Genji, written by lady-in-waiting, Murasaki Shikibu, to be one of the world’s first novels? This is one of many fun historical facts I learned while playing Trekking through History with my kids.

Trekking through History is the latest educational game from Underdog Games. We have enjoyed using Trekking the World to brush up on our geography and were excited about this newest board game.

Learning History through Educational Games

Our family loves incorporating board games into our learning experiences. The right educational board game not only adds an element of fun but helps to cement the subject matter you’re learning.

Incorporating Trekking through History into our rotation of family board games has helped my kids learn historical facts and time periods that would have otherwise gone forgotten.

Most importantly, they enjoy the game which makes learning natural and fun.

Trekking Through History Overview of Play

“Welcome to Wayback Tours,” it begins. “You’re about to go on a 3-day tour of history, traveling thousands of years in a time machine to experience great moments from our past.”

Play is broken into three rounds with each round representing one day of your trip. Each day, you visit a series of historical events, spending a different number of hours at each one.

You score points by sticking to your Itinerary and visiting the historical events in chronological order.

The setup for Trekking through History is different than Trekking the World. While we like both games, I found Trekking through History easier to set up and learn.

And, bonus, there is even a mode for solo play! So, while the box says 2-4 players, you can set it up to play with only one person. In which case you play against the Historian.

What Kids Will Learn Playing Trekking Through History

Because one objective of the board game is to align cards chronologically, kids will learn where historical events and figures occur in relation to each other. If you keep a Timeline Notebook, then they can even add their favorite card from each game to their timeline.

In addition, each playing card not only has a historical figure or event and the date, but a few sentences about who or what it was. Players read each card they take out loud, so everyone playing learns a little about that time in history.

As kids play more frequently, they will become more familiar with the figures and events on the cards and where on the historical timeline they occurred.

Trekking through History is an educational game that makes learning about different people and events in history fun and interesting.

How to Use Trekking through History in Your Homeschool

If you want to add even more learning to your Trekking through History play, here are a few suggestions we liked:

  • If you draw an ancestor card, name one of your ancestors and something you know about them
  • Pick your favorite card and learn more about that person or event
  • Add your cards to a Timeline Notebook
  • Pick 3-5 cards and memorize the facts on them

My kid’s favorite history days are the ones where I break out the board game. Learning through play doesn’t have to end because kids get older. So grab Trekking through History and add an element of fun to your history studies.
