What is Picta Dicta?

Picta Dicta Natural World is an online Latin vocabulary program that teaches over 400 English and Latin words that pertain specifically to the world around us.  It takes a three-prong approach–See it, Hear it, Understand it.

How It Works

Students are first shown a picture from the campaign they are learning about.  For example in basic animals, a picture of a dog would be shown along with the definition underneath it.  The audio would give the pronunciation.  After seeing and hearing the names associated with the pictures, the students are then given the Latin or English name of the animal.  Then they are asked to pick that animal from a group on the following screen.

One of the things that I liked best about the program was that it could be tailored to the learning level of the child.  I had my five, eight and ten year old enrolled in the program.  Each of the three began on a different level in the program.

Basic Level

My five year old, Olivia, started the with Basic program.  This level is geared toward your non or beginning reader and each campaign begins with learning the English word and definition first and later learning the Latin word.  All the words are accompanied by a picture of the subject matter and have an icon to click to have it read to you.

Reader I

My 8 year old son, Haydn, was in the Reader I program.  The Reader I program also incorporates the English word and definition, but pictures are not always shown.  It also adds two new games for Articles, which is a type of fill in the blank, and Spelling.

Reader II

My 10 year old, Ellawyn, began in the Reader II level.  Reader II is similar to Reader I, with the exception that the sentences are more complex and slightly more difficult.

Lesson Length

With the exception of Reviews, the lessons don’t take much time to complete.  Students are rated between 1-5 stars for performance and can redo a lesson as many times as they want to increase their star count.  They also have the option to train.  Training allows them to pick as many chapters as they would like and then pick the type of game they want to train in.  For example, they can choose to train in the anatomy and small animals chapters and the type of reviewing they want to do.

Learning Latin Was Fun

My kids asked me every day if they could do their Picta Dicta.  It was one subject that they never forgot.  Even though they were doing different levels, they were still learning the same vocabulary.  They would often cheer each other along and quiz one another to see who knew it better.
Ellawyn was actually not terribly excited when I told her she was going to be learning Latin.  However, she liked it the most and was probably the most eager to complete the lessons.  She told me she wished they had French as well.   French is the other language she is learning and she found this method very useful in helping her to learn the vocabulary.

My son’s favorite part was probably the lack of a text book–and the fact that he could be done in a relatively short manner.

For Olivia, having it set up like a game appealed to her.  She did need supervision while she did her lessons.  She tended to get distracted and then she didn’t know what she was supposed to be doing.

I liked Picta Dicta because my kids were excited to learn their Latin vocabulary.  And since they were excited, they took charge of their learning.  I didn’t have to remind them and they didn’t feel like they were trudging through another subject.

Picta Dicta made learning Latin fun.
