In the Swing of Things

Softball and baseball season are underway.  Life always gets a little crazy during this time.  Ellawyn and Olivia are playing in a softball league and Haydn is playing Little League.  Two leagues means two different ball fields, so it’s been an exercise in planning to make sure we can get everyone to the right field.

Ellawyn has been pitching this year.  She struck out four girls the first game and caught a line drive, which surprised her a little.  I always enjoy watching as their skill level progresses.

Haydn is a bouncing ball of energy.  The first time he got a hit and made it to base he was so excited that he was jumping up and down on the base while the first baseman fumbled with the ball.  His base coach tells him, “Stay on the base!”  Apparently, he didn’t realize he could still get tagged out.  But now he knows and he’ll have to find another way to channel that energy.

This is Olivia’s first year playing and while she is excited, where Haydn is energy, Olivia is daydreams.  The child doesn’t run, she meanders.  During one game she was on second and was supposed to be running to third.  Instead she took a casual stroll between bases, took time to take her helmet off because it was mashing her hair, and then was quite surprised when she finally arrived at third base to discover she was out.  By the end of the second game, everybody knew her name–coaches, players, spectators–because they were all yelling at her to run! the whole game.

So we’re working on what it means to hustle.

Pinewood Derby

Along with games, is regular life we are fitting in.  Haydn participated in Pinewood Derby and his car came in first place.  He was pretty excited about that.

Our oldest girls attend the Young Adult Action Society at the library every week and have enjoyed the exposure to different activities.  They are also both planning on attending the upcoming homeschool Prom, so dress fitting also gets squeezed in between games.

So much fun and not always enough parents, but we make do.
