Park Beautification for Earth Day

This morning we joined our homeschool group for a service project at one of the city parks.

The kids always love showing up to plant and help beautify the park.

It’s really nice that the park allows all ages to participate.  Even my little Lenora got to help plant.

She was so excited to fill the holes in with dirt, that after planting a bush and moving on to the next one, we came back to discover Lenora at the original site and just a spot where the dirt had obviously been turned, but no plant.  Apparently she pulled the plant out so she could finish filling the hole.  We replanted it and hopefully it will still be alright.

Ellawyn was excited to be able to count this as part of her Personal Progress.

Haydn needed a service project for scouts as well.

Olivia spent the first part collecting the flag markers, but a shovel eventually freed up and she got to do her own plant.

Allie helped out with the younger kids where needed, making sure they each got to use the shovel and showing how to put the plants in.

I should have counted how many we planted total.  There were quite a lot.  I think it averaged about two per kid.

After we were finished my kids went to check the plants they did last time only to find they were gone.  The park worker said they had a hard time keeping people from walking through them and they all got ruined.  She said when they re-do it they’ll use more plants and maybe put a fence around them.  My kids were a little disappointed that their hard work had gone to waste, but they are still looking forward to the next park service project.

I find projects like these help to give my children pride in their community and we are always happy to participate.
