New Online Homeschool Curriculum for Pre-K Through 2nd Grade
Disclaimer: I was compensated by Homeschool+ for my time and honest review.
“Mom, is it time to do my math yet? Or maybe play that alien game with the Spanish?” my four-year-old asks me. We’ve been using Homeschool+, a new online homeschool curriculum catered to Pre-K through 2nd grade and he and his six-year-old sister have really been enjoying the lessons. If we didn’t have screen time limits, I think they would spend all day on it.
What is Homeschool+?
Homeschool+ is a new online homeschool curriculum for Pre-K through 2nd-grade students created by the makers of ABCmouse and specifically catered to homeschool families.
Homeschool+ is an all-inclusive homeschool curriculum. It covers the most important subjects for this learning group, namely Reading and Math, but also includes over twelve individual courses covering Art, Science, and General Studies.
My Math Academy curriculum covers beginner math through four years of learning (roughly Pre-K through 2nd grade).
My Reading Academy is designed to take a beginning reader to full comprehension.
When you combine all these together you get a well-rounded curriculum tailored to your child.
The best part is that it’s all in one place! You don’t need subscriptions to multiple sites in order to find what you’re looking for or make sure you cover all the bases.
Perfect Placement with Adaptive Learning for Reading & Math
Both the reading and math curricula are adaptive to the student. As the student begins, they answer questions and the lessons will adjust based on their answers. The reporting will show you what your child has mastered and not just what they have covered.
I was surprised at how well they placed both of my children! Immediately they were doing lessons that coincided with what we had been learning in our homeschool. There was no need for me to adjust or search for the “right level.”
This is perfect if you are unsure of where your child should be or if you might be starting in the middle of the year. It is also great because it allows children to be placed individually in both reading and math.
Arts, Sciences, & General Studies for Pre-K through 2nd Grade
As mentioned earlier, there are twelve courses that cover Art, Science, and General Studies. Each of these consists of 12-20 lessons. As an added bonus, each of these comes with a lesson plan you can download to make it more interactive and expand the learning experience in your home.
This allows for adding a hands-on element to your children’s learning, which is really important at this age.
For example, when students are learning about what a community is, one of the activities to extend learning is to watch the video Speak Like a Scientist: Habitat. After discussing what a habitat is and how it compares to a community, you will guide your child as they make a habitat.
We choose to make a coral reef using sand playdough and different shaped colored pasta. It was a fun way to reinforce the lesson.
It also helped my children to make cross-connections within subjects by learning about both communities and habitats together.
Lesson Planning with Homeschool+
Because Homeschool+ is made with homeschool parents in mind, you have some control over what your child learns during the week and when. You can set time limits for math and reading (20 minutes is the default), pick what days your child does each elective subject, or choose to skip them entirely. You can even adjust the schedule from week to week.
If your child misses a scheduled elective subject, it automatically moves it to the next week.
I really liked that it would automatically move the subject and lesson to the next week for me because I didn’t have to remember to do it. But also because it meant my child wasn’t missing any lessons.
Under the Progress Tracker tab, you can see what they completed from the Arts, Sciences, and General Electives they were assigned that week.
From this I know if a lesson will be moved to the next week and what lessons my child completed. If I click on the caret for the specific lesson, I can see further details that show exactly what activities were completed.
Our Homeschool+ Experience
Both my six and four-year-olds like learning with Homeschool+. It can be used as a full curriculum or a supplement for your Pre-K through 2nd graders. We used it as a supplement for my first grader and a full curriculum for my Pre-K learner.
Let me share a few of our favorite things.
The lessons were short, fun, and engaging. Both the kids and I liked that the lessons were taught by an older (than them) kid. It made the lessons more relatable to them. And it gave the feeling of having an older sibling help them with their schoolwork, which my kids love. As a large homeschool family, older siblings helping with younger siblings is par for the course, so having a curriculum that embraces that dynamic was great.
The animated avatars were too cute and my kids loved them. My daughter really liked Bixly, the robot from My Reading Academy, while my son resonated with the geometric men in My Math Academy.
I love the added subjects. In my homeschool, my main priorities at this age are covering Reading and Math. While I do my best to incorporate Art, Science, and other subjects, it’s not uncommon for them to get skipped. With my Homeschool+, I just add them to the schedule! My kids love watching the videos and doing the activities.
Both my daughter and son have enjoyed their Spanish lessons. They pay careful attention to the lesson, so they can match the right Spanish word with the picture in order to earn a turbo boost for their racer. I’ve been impressed by their progress!
I also like being able to download the easy-to-follow lesson plans. They give a good balance between online and hands-on learning. I find the Signs of Success and Needs portion of them very helpful in gauging how well my children have learned the material.
Overall, we have been happy with our experience.
If you are looking for an all-inclusive, online homeschool curriculum, with hands-on activities included for your Pre-K through 2nd graders, then give Homeschool+ a try!
