Homeschool Prom 2019

When you homeschool, Prom isn’t based on grade level, but age.  I mean, let’s be honest, half the time if you ask me what grade my kids are in I’m just going to make something up that sounds nice.  And for this reason, both of my girls went to Prom this weekend.

Allie was so excited about the prospect of Prom and after enough nagging convinced Raena to go with her.

It is a little humorous at times to watch the discrepancy between my oldest girls personalities.  Allie was super ecstatic about all the fluff that goes into going to Prom–the dresses, hair, make-up, all the things.  She put together a group of girls to go with, invited some to come get ready at our house, asked someone to do her hair and make-up, couldn’t wait to go dress shopping.

Raena likes to go to dances and socialize, but she could care less about all the fluff.  I think she had fun trying on dresses, but she didn’t continue to try dresses on just for fun.  She picked cute, but practical shoes, did her own make-up, had no plan for her hair.  But she was excited to go be with friends and dance.

Together they push each other just a little out of their comfort zone.   And while they don’t always recognize it, those differences compliment each other.  Allie’s Type-A personality causes Raena to step up her game.  Raena’s laid back casualness helps to keep her sister from going crazy over the top.  While it may drive each of them a little batty to have to deal with the flip side of the coin, I think it’s good for them.

They met a group at the Mellow Mushroom for dinner and then headed to prom.  Where they then met up with 220 other homeschoolers between the ages of 13-18 from Arizona.  They had an absolute blast and arrived home quite exhausted.
