Greg Landry’s Online Self-Paced Homeschool Science Classes

Disclaimer: I received free access to College Prep Science Young Scientist Anatomy & Physiology self-paced online homeschool science course for the purpose of this review. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own.

There are few subjects that tend to leave homeschool mom’s a little queasy when thinking about teaching them. Homeschool science tends to be one of them.

One of the best parts about homeschooling is it’s not dependent upon your own expertise in the subject, but more your enthusiasm. Which is great, because I’m no scientist. I’ve found, if I can find someone who is passionate, as well as knowledgeable in the subject, then my kids get the passion and I can supply the enthusiasm and support.

Getting Started with College Prep Science Online Self-Paced Courses

The great thing about self-paced courses is you get to choose the pace. So whether you do science every day, two days a week, or whenever you remember, they fit perfectly into your schedule. My son did approximately one class a week.

I printed off the study guide and then left him to it. He would watch the videos and work on the study guide pages.

Study Guide and Note-Taking

The study guide is broken into two parts–Part 1 (chapters 1-6) and Part 2 (chapters 7-13). The study guide is complementary to the videos and assists in helping the child to learn the information.

One of the things I really liked about this course is the focus on learning to take good notes and study them. In fact, the whole first video is dedicated to this. This is an important skill that will serve children long past one science class.

The Study Guide is full of vivid illustrations and eye-catching colorful pages, in addition to the black and white pages meant for the child to fill in. The separation of color and monochrome make it easy for your child to know which pages to fill out. And in practical matters, it saves on printing.

Labs and Lab Reports

The third class covers the scientific method and lab reports. It includes a template lab report for the course as well as a lab report sample.

Professor Landry gives suggestions for what students might do for a lab. For example, in lesson six, he suggests having the students estimate how many centimeters their bones are and then using a ruler to take measurements.

He encourages students to do a lab experiment even if it is not on the topic he just covered.

The actual experiment and whether or not you choose to do any are entirely up to you. They can be as simple, complicated, or non-existent as you would like.

Overall Thoughts on College Prep Science Self-Paced Homeschool Science Course

I thought the Young Scientist Anatomy & Physiology self-paced course was well done. The videos are good quality. Professor Greg Landry taught well and incorporated real-life stories into his teachings to connect with kids.

The flexibility of a self-paced course worked well for our schedule. I also liked that I could tailor labs to my son’s abilities and interests and whether or not I have time for them. I’m often a “pick a day and do science experiments” mom, so I appreciated not having the next lesson be dependent on whether or not I remembered to grab materials.

I would definitly try some of his other course offerings.

Homeschool Science Freebies

Greg Landry also offers several homeschool science freebies to homeschool moms on the College Prep Science site. Some are geared toward moms, such as his list of common mistakes with homeschooling science. Others, such as his Earth science infographic lesson, are meant for students.

Be sure to sign up for the freebies while checking out his other course offerings.
