Where is God During War?

Next year we will be tackling WWI and WWII and along with it the Holocaust, one of the most horrific events in recent history.   I have spent this year searching out good books; a variety of biographies and historical fiction to help portray the desperation, desolation, and despondency of war, while at the same time helping my children to see that the world was not forsaken.  God did not forget His people.  In the face of obvious evil, it can be easy to feel He is missing, which is why it is all the more important to seek out the miracles.  And so, I have also sought out books, particularly biographies and autobiographies, that show God was in the details.  True accounts that display charity, which is the pure love of Christ, through others.

One such book is Lieutenant Terry’s Christmas Fudge.  Author Gerald N. Lund shares the experiences of Lieutenant Terry’s service during WWII and the subsequent miracles that constantly surrounded him.  It is a story of love.  A story of war.  A story of faith.  A story of miracles.  A story of fudge.

It is a story that reminds us that even in the darkest of times, there are those who choose to follow the Savior and emulate His love for others.

This is a lovely and heartwarming story that would be a perfect read for the upcoming season.  So grab the book and then make some fudge to share with those around you and remember what really matters: lifting the burdens of others through Christlike love and service.

Here is a simple fudge recipe similar to the one made in the book:

Ingredients

3 cups semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1/8 t. salt
1 1/2t. vanilla extract

Directions

1. Melt chocolate, sweetened condensed milk and salt in a medium saucepan.
2. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in vanilla
3. Pour into parchment lined 8×9 dish and chill for two hours.
4. Share with others!

*I received a complimentary copy of the book for an honest review.
